A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Creating a Legacy - Together

Thanks to your generosity and unwavering support, our 2025 Annual Support Campaign reached its ambitious $2 million goal—the largest in our history—in record time. This year’s theme, LEGACY, resonated deeply across our association, as many of our branches celebrated milestone anniversaries. We honored our proud past while uniting our communities to build a brighter future for generations to come.

That legacy is already taking shape. We anticipate record-breaking camp enrollment this summer, and new capital projects are underway to enhance how we serve our members in youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our strength continues to grow thanks to new board members, passionate volunteers, and rising youth leaders. In April, we honored six extraordinary Youth Service Champions who are already making a lasting impact.

As we look ahead to serving even more families in 2025, we know that partnerships with volunteers, businesses, and local leaders will be more important than ever. We are deeply grateful to all who have helped us create a legacy of hope, and we invite you to continue building that legacy with us.

Yours in service,

Rick Gorab

SUMMER CAMP

Summer at the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges is more than just a season—it's a celebration of growth, discovery, and community. Across our branches, we offer a diverse array of camp experiences tailored to ignite curiosity and build confidence in every child. From the imaginative adventures of Early Adventures for preschoolers to the leadership development in our Teen Adventure Camps, each program is designed to foster self-esteem, social skills, and a sense of belonging. Specialized camps like Creative Theater and STEM-focused Discovery Camps provide unique opportunities for campers to explore their passions in a supportive environment.

These enriching programs are made possible by the unwavering support of our donors. Through generous contributions, we've been able to provide over $2.4 million in financial assistance to nearly 3,500 individuals in 2024 alone, ensuring that one in four campers can attend our camps regardless of their financial circumstances. Initiatives like 'Camp for a Cause' exemplify our commitment to inclusivity, with donations directly funding scholarships that open doors for families in need.

To our dedicated donors: thank you. Your generosity transforms lives, turning summer dreams into realities for countless children. Because of you, our camps remain accessible sanctuaries where every child can learn, grow, and thrive. Together, we're building a stronger, more inclusive community—one camper at a time.

NEW DONOR-FUNDED PROGRAM PUTS FOCUS ON VETERANS’ HEALTH

The Metro YMCA recently launched the Veterans Wellness Initiative for the first time at the West Essex and Sussex County YMCAs. The free program meets weekly for in-person exercise and wellness, led by a personal trainer, and virtually to discuss their health in mind, body and spirit.

Open to active military, military veterans, and/or a spouse or partner, the free 12-week Veterans Pathway program provides participants access to health and wellness opportunities, as well as meaningful social connection with those who share the bond of military service. Participants benefit from free access to the Y360 virtual wellness platform, family membership to the Y during the 12-week session, and an additional six month individual adult membership following successful completion of the program.

The Veterans Wellness Initiative began in 2015 at the Doylestown branch of the YMCA of Bucks and Hunterdon Counties as a way to create community and wellness opportunities for Bucks County veterans. Since then, the free, donor-supported Pathway program has expanded to other NJ branches, serving over 650 veterans and their families.

GRANT SUPPORTS YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH

The Healthcare Foundation of the Oranges has granted funds to support the health and wellness of children at the East Orange YMCA. The Youth Mental Health Accessibility Initiative aims to help low-income and diverse populations access enriching child care,  recreational opportunities, and direct mental health services.

The grant will significantly support the Y for All Fund, providing financial assistance for Y programs. The East Orange Y and Metro Y's Mental Health Team will partner with a Mental Health Service Provider to offer counseling for School Age Child Care participants during after-care. This initiative will boost mental health education, awareness, referrals, and services, reducing stigma by embedding these services in trusted programs.

A BIG DILL FOR SUSSEX COUNTY: NEW PICKLEBALL CENTER BRIDGES THE GAP FOR FAMILY-FRIENDLY ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES

The Sussex County YMCA celebrated the long-awaited grand opening of its brand new indoor Pickleball Center on Jan. 15. The YMCA Pickleball Center, located in Lafayette, is the first of its kind in Sussex County, and the first standalone indoor pickleball center operated by a YMCA in New Jersey. Since its opening, the center has seen a surge in interest, from beginners excited to try the sport to seasoned players thrilled to have a high-quality indoor facility. Many members love how accessible and social pickleball is, and it has created an entirely new way for people to connect at the Y.

Our leagues and clinics have filled up quickly, and there’s been a noticeable increase in multi-generational play, with families and friends enjoying the game together. A family shared their experience of struggling to find a place to play in Sussex County. However, they told us that this new facility will provide a valuable opportunity for family members of all ages to participate in athletic activities together!

SOUTH MOUNTAIN YMCA

easter egg hunt with real kidsThe South Mountain YMCA had the joy of partnering with Together We Bloom to host our very first Inclusive Egg Hunt—an event designed to give children of all abilities the chance to enjoy the fun and tradition of collecting eggs in a way that works for them.

Upon arrival, families were welcomed with a variety of activities, from open gym play to calming coloring stations. Our sensory-friendly bunny led each of the three egg hunt sessions, guiding the kids through a gentle and supportive experience. Outside, the atmosphere remained calm and inviting, with bubbles, playground fun, play-dough, and fidgets adding to the sensory-friendly environment. We also had the South Orange Sensory Activation Van on site, offering a peaceful space for anyone needing a moment of calm.

This event was possible with the dedication and enthusiasm of our incredible volunteers and staff, whose efforts brought the vision to life. The collaborative spirit and innovative approach to this new programming help us create inclusive, welcoming spaces where individuals of all abilities can learn, grow, and thrive at the Y. A special acknowledgment to Nicole Renee Josey, our Birthday Party coordinator, whose leadership and passion were instrumental in shaping this inclusive experience.

SUSSEX COUNTY YMCA

DSC02476This year’s 23rd Annual Sussex County YMCA Golf Outing is more than just a day on the greens—it’s a celebration of legacy, leadership, and 20 years of impact at our Hardyston facility. Since opening our doors in 2005, the Sussex County Y has grown into a vibrant hub of health, connection, and support for more than 650 families every year. In honor of this milestone, we’re proudly recognizing the incredible individuals who helped make this journey possible—our past honorees, with each of the 18 holes dedicated to someone who helped shape our Y story.

But the true power of this event lies in its purpose. Proceeds from the outing support our Annual Support Campaign, providing life-changing scholarships for camp, swim lessons, child care, and transformative programs like LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA—free wellness support for cancer survivors. Every swing, every sponsorship, every moment on the course helps us open doors for more families to thrive. Thank you for being part of our story—and for helping us build a stronger, healthier Sussex County.

WEST ESSEX YMCA

This year the West Essex YMCA, supported by funding from the Flagstar Foundation, introduced an arts and culture enrichment program for West Orange students enrolled in the Y's School Age Child Care program and Universal Pre-K program at Peanut Shell Early Childhood Learning Center in Livingston.

At the end of the program year, we will bring together families, community members, and staff for a joyful culminating celebration that highlights the children’s creative journey through arts and culture. This special event will serve as both a showcase and a celebration, with performances, a curated art exhibition, and opportunities for participants to reflect on their experiences.

BUILDING LIFELONG BONDS: HOW THE SOUTH MOUNTAIN YMCA ENRICHES OUR FAMILY

MEMBER TESTIMONIAL

The South Mountain Y plays such a central role in all my kids' lives. Our children are part of the Y's aftercare program and return every summer for SOMAPY Summer Camp. Our son is flourishing in the Early Childcare Learning Center, eagerly participating in his weekly cooking and gym classes. I've also promised him that he’ll start Y soccer next year. Plus, every Sunday, our kids take swim lessons at the West Essex Y, working toward passing the deep-water test at the pool this summer. For our family, our closest friends and support system have come from their time at the Y. They entered elementary school with a tight-knit group of buddies, who are still their go-to playmates, sports teammates, and best friends.

TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE: PARENTS PRAISE WEST ESSEX YMCA'S RACERS SWIM TEAM

MEMBER TESTIMONIAL

My son's experience on the West Essex YMCA Racers swim team has been amazing. He has learned so much about competitive swimming from Coaches James, Val, and Amy - not just strokes and technique but being a good teammate and communicating with your team and coaches, too. It's the full experience. We could not have asked for more in our first competitive swim season. My son is a veteran of West Essex Y swim lessons as well, and I have recommended the Y over and over again to people looking to get their kids comfortable in the water because the Y takes lessons beyond just in the water - kids really learn to swim there, and to enjoy swimming.
